Mainstream in England: Homeopathy as a Satire

GebhardLondon260.jpg

In England there is a storm brewing; followers of the rational sciences are challenging Homeopathy and the alternative medicine scene. Homeopaths at all levels fear being left in the rain altogether.
Their method of healing which has been recognised and used in British Hospitals since 1948 is to be deleted from the British National Healthcare system. Homeopathic medicines may be taken into consideration if the relevant evidence to substantiate them, is on hand.

In fact the bad publicity surrounding homeopathy has been spread mainly through the entertainment media, as also via the Internet, especially blogs and twitter thus receiving much public and political attention as a video clip on You Tube shows; whereby a ridiculous situation is portrayed- two homeopaths are seen in an emergency room trying ineffectually, and using ridiculous methods, to save a patient with severe internal injuries, lying lifeless on a stretcher; its shows arnica tincture as water with nothing in it, they try floral essences, using semi-precious stones, astrology, and in a last attempt even try to prolong the lifeline on the patients hand with a biro. Not only does the patient die but the homeopaths also prove to be incapable of reading the clock to determine the correct time of death. Whilst having a quick swig of lager - homeopathic of course, the "doctors" decide to from now on only treat hypochondriacs and charge them absorbitant prices. The "healers" portrayed in this sketch are none other but the popular British comedians Mitchell and Webb whose success with sketches and a tv series are well known. Admitedly the sketch was professionally made and very funny. This is just one clip of many that can be called up on You Tube under the heading of Homeopathy.

Mitchell & Webb are a British Comedy Duo and are strongly represented in the media and as such extremely popular. To the pleasure of their audience they take popular topics, to which homeopathy also belongs nowadays, and totally take the mickey out of it!

Viewers laugh, form an opinion on the subject being parodied without looking behind the scenes and checking scientific studies which would strengthen the case for homeopathy. Clips like these underline the popularity of this subject and its place in public debate.

Politics and Science versus Homeopathy - what is the current state?

The anti-homeopathy campagne is just one part of the broader movement against alternative medical practices in England (known under CAM). The prevailing gaol of this campagne is to get CAM kicked out of the NHS, and stop government funding of any related research.

In the line of fire amongst others, the Royal London Homeopathic Hospital, which is an international cornerstone for Homeopathy and has been approved and established since 1948.

In its study,"Evidence Check 2 Homeopathy", a special commission set up by the House of Commons, reach the conclusion that homeopathic medicines have no more than a placebo effect, and should therefore be taken off the NHS services list.

Furthermore, the House of Commons commission calls for Homeopathic medicine permits to be subject to random clinical studies to varify its effectivness. Finally, the commission recommends stopping any further research as lack of proof for use is too widespread. However, CAM research can prove that as a result of the work of organizations such as the International Society for Complementary Medical Research, or from initiatives such as CAMbrella, that an ever increasing number of alternative medical practices have been awarded a certificate " in keeping within the criteria of evidence based on effective medicine".

Random, doublyblind controlled studies still are seen as the golden standard of Science, are however considered to be highly controversial amongst experts.

This already complex subject can be disputed further still, as David H Freedman, a reknowned American science journalist published a new book on the subject of the validity in general, of scientific studies using the system of randomised doubleblind methods, his deliveration on this topic proves to have a most provocative core argument thesis; he states most of these studies are useless!!and further goes on to state that in alternative medicine there are a number of areas of uncertainty, such as influnza vaccinations, surgery, psychotherapy or the treatment of multi-morbid patients.

The experts report mentioned before, "Evidence check 2 Homeopathy", does not fulfill the given scientific criteria that it demands from homeopathy itself.

Several arguments from public hearings beforehand were taken oin board, and others ignored without comment. The main reasoning of the report as a whole, is only based on one article (Shang et al 2005),published in the Lancet, which in turn has been deemed to be continually factually insufficient (Rutten & Lüdke and Stolper & Lüdke). In the aftermath of such substantial criticism, the Lancet publishers Elsevier, even arranged a press announcement entitled "new evidence to support Homeopathy", which nevertheless, still failed to mention the silent, but leading author Professor Edzard Ernst in the experts report, who was at the time still chair of the University of Alternative Medicines in Exeter.

Good Science, Bad Science - The truth about Sciences

Somebody who wants to inform themselves objectively using sources and information, will have a hard time because the attacks against homeopathy have ,managed to reach such a high status in public perception and Internet ranking, the aggressors however, remaining mainly anonymous.
In the forefront of the campagne against homeopathy is a group called "sense about science", (www.senseaboutscience.org.uk).
After in depth research, the journalist Claus Fritzsche believes this group to be a "fantastical orchestration" of the Pharmaceutical lobbyists. The financial support of the aforesaid group comes from amongst others, Glaxo Smith and Kline, Pfizer and the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI). The hesd of Sense about Science",Tracy Brown, has a PR background, rather than that of a medical researcher. She was a senior analyst at Regester Larkin, an advisory company specialising in reputation and management strategies whose customers who were having a Public relations crisis, amongs others from the Chemical/ Pharmaceutical industry.
The head of sense about sciences admitted to being sponsored by this industry to the American science journalist David H Freedman, but only by 30%. Further financing came from foundations, she was finally to add.
Other supportes of the anti-homeopathy campagne are individuals, such as Professor Edzard Ernst, who wrote a CAM antagonistic publication;"the truth, and nothing but the truth". As a much sought after expert of the CAM research group, he knows how to exploit the media to such an extent that his traces are to be found in all areas.

Lobbywork in England - a living Tradition

George Monbiot a British journalist, and an enviromental and political activist researched the hidden PR and the link between politics and industry.

His website  www.lobbywatch.org exposes lobbyists, PR activities, actors, political networks and industry friendly scientists.

On the website lists can be found of institutes and groups that are engaged internationally and apparently independently that their sponsors are seen in the best possible light and their opponents are defamed. Sense about science is of course amongst them, and the related groups use exactly the tactics that Monbiot describes. False or made up witnesses, self-proclaimed experts, verbal malice, infiltration and manipulation of public opinion an so forth.

Curt Körters, chairman of the German central association of Homeopathic Doctors is definately impressed by the effectiveness of the UK Pharma lobby, and bows before the "campagne management of these people".

The successful influencing of public opinion is achieved through arduous networking by means of modern IT technology and can also be attributed to the dynamic lobbying in the English Parliament that has a long and deep rooted tradition.

For example, "time online" reported in March 2010 that British congressmen can be rented, "as one does a taxi", for a fee of 5,000 pounds a day.

Any company can receive the support of a qualified lawyer when a certain company request should be furthered before Parliament; "effective representation and lobbying for you", with the professed gaol "to help you achieve your gaol in influencing the decision makers". This service is offered for example, by a legitimately registered London office, whereby they state that the lobbywork does not even have to be paid for, " as freedom of democracy and participation in public events is their obligation".

(„A handy list of dimwitted members of parliament” auf www.dcscience.net).

In seinen fundierten informativen Beiträgen erläutert Dr. Ing.
